What is a blue prescription?

A blue prescription is a prescription for medicines or medical equipment where the costs are covered either partially or completely by the National Insurance Scheme. The name "blue prescription" comes from the fact that doctors used to write such prescriptions on blue forms.

A blue prescription is valid for a maximum of one year from the date it is issued, or until the prescription runs out. Normally, you can collect three months' worth of medication at a time.

How much do I have to pay as a deductible?

When you collect medicines and equipment on a blue prescription, you must pay a deductible unless you have a free card. In 2021, the deductible is set at 39% of the cost, or a maximum of NOK 520 for 3 months of consumption.

The maximum amount applies only if the prescriptions are written by the same doctor on the same date. You can check how much you have paid during the year by logging in to Min helse.

When will I get a free pass?

Co-payments for medicines and equipment are part of deductible ceiling 1, which also includes doctors, psychologists, outpatient clinics, X-ray institutes and patient travel.

In 2025, deductible ceiling 1 is set at NOK 520 per quarter. Once you exceed the limit, you will receive a free card and you will not have to pay any more deductibles for the rest of the calendar year.

Some people automatically receive a free card:

  • Children under 16 years of age
  • Minimum pensioners
  • People receiving supplementary benefits
  • People with occupational injuries (after decision from Helfo)

Do I have to bring my free card to the pharmacy?

Your free card is stored electronically, but keeping it with you can be helpful in case an error occurs. A physical free card is sent by mail within three weeks after you reach the deductible limit.
